       We still have a long way to go…

            Kaya had her third surgery September 4^th, just two days after her third Birthday. The MRI three months later showed it was not successful and after visiting a Syringomyelia specialist in Austin we learned Kaya’s Chiari wasn’t completely gone and the Syringomyelia covered 85% of her Spine.

She had two decompression surgeries in 2006 for her Chiari and just came home from her third (decompression) brain surgery.  They harvested a piece of one of Kaya’s ribs, to reinforce the surgery they did on the back of her skull.  Kaya has come through the surgery so much better than her first surgeries, but only God’s will and time will tell if this will make Kaya C & S symptom free.  Kaya will have another MRI six weeks after the surgery to see if what the doctors did allows cerebral fluid to flow as it should.  Every MRI is at least two hours and Kaya has to be put under anesthesia for them.

            It seems like there is so much guessing from doctors concerning these disorders. The answers to Kaya’s family’s questions are never definite and when Kaya’s pain will cease is still uncertain…as it is for so many others fighting Chiari and Syringomelia (C&S). That is why research continues to be the greatest need for these conditions and your support CAN make a difference!

            The 3^rd Annual Conquer for Kaya Charity Golf Tournament will be held September 22, 2008 at 1pm SilverHorn Golf Club in San Antonio, TX. The tournament will be followed by dinner and silent and live auctions for the golfers and their families and guests.
